Maximum Exposure

Puerto Rican supermodel Joan Smalls nabs an only-girl editorial for the May 2012 edition of American Vogue lensed by model-maker Steven Meisel. Smalls is clearly the flavour of the month thanks to editorial appearances in both US and Paris Vogue, the latter shot by Terry Richardson, in addition to her ground-breaking Australian Vogue cover captured by Kai Z Feng. Smalls looks every bit the star in the make, showing off her stunning athletic frame in the season's leggiest shorts by Dolce & Gabbana, Jason Wu, Balenciaga, Nina Ricci and Proenza Schouler. More impressive though is the range of expression exhibited by Smalls, which alternates from smouldering to cooly sophisticated to all-out "girls just wanna have fun." Smalls' ability to emote on film and her effervescent personality will ensure that she maintains the interest of photographers, magazine editors, casting directors and the public as she continues her ascent through the modelling ranks.
