Metal Works

Sebastian Kim casts the spotlight on four of modelling's most promising new faces for an editorial in the June/July 2012 issue of French Numéro. Models Lindsey Wixson, Sui He, Elza Luijendijk and Jasmine Tookes illuminate the pages of Numéro in a stunning editorial shot entirely on location at a scrap metal car yard. Kim does a sterling job of tapping into the individual allure of each model from the all-American wholesomeness of Wixson, the mysterious exoticism of He, the global accessibility of Tookes, to the classic beauty of Luijendijk. French Numéro strikes editorial gold with its casting choices by illustrating the true beauty of diversity and by also allowing each model equal editorial space to shine.

Pretty Much Everything

In December 2011, my favourite photographic team Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin released a retrospective of their work through the publishing house Taschen. The three volume set entitled "Pretty Much Everything" has been released with a limited edition run of 1200 copies and comes enclosed in a massive slipcase cover with the image - Me Kissing Vinoodh (Eternally) printed on it. As far as retrospectives are concerned, "Pretty Much Everything" is an apt title given the voluminous nature of the two books of photos enclosed within, which feature a total of 666 images spanning over two decades of the pairs prolific works.

Leafing through the two photographic volumes is like taking a step back in fashion/modelling history given the number of iconic images that the pair have collaborated on for publications including Paris Vogue, V Magazine, Visionnaire, Purple, W and not to mention countless high profile advertising campaigns. The third book in the set contains essays and interviews on the Dutch duo covering their inspirations and philosophical musings. "Pretty Much Everything" comes with a  hefty price tag of $700.00 per copy and is worth every cent if you are an avid fan of fashion photography. For those of us who are scrimping away our pennies or rather hoping for a copy to mysteriously appear under our Christmas trees this year, here are a few snippets from the book as well as some images from the duo's iconic Vogue Paris 2003 Calendar.

Walk this Way

The Fall/Winter 2012 collections heralded a shift in modelling's aesthetic towards a new model army with a distinctly androgynous vibe. Forecasting this latest casting trend, W Magazine showcases the next generation of budding model superstars in an editorial for its June 2012 issue lensed by Craig McDean. Newcomers Maria Bradley, Laura Kampman, Marte Mei Van Haaster, Othilia Simon and Marique Schimmel brave the elements for the studio shoot donning the toughest street chic looks. This new collective of models possess a stealth like presence on the runway, a nonchalant beauty and an androgynous cool that can't be faked.

In Love with Mario

Mario Testino is this generation's undisputed photographer to the stars having photographed the late Princess Diana of Wales, Madonna, Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow and legions of supermodels for publications including the American, French and British versions of Vogue, Vanity Fair, V Magazine and Allure. Testino brings his trademark hyper-glamourous, vibrant imagery to the pages of Love Magazine for an editorial featuring the who's who of modelling's elite. Kate Moss, Lara Stone, Carmen Kass, Lily Donaldson, Natalia Vodianova, Rosie Huntington-Whitely, Daria Werbowry, Edie Campbell and Melissa Stasiuk cavort in front of Testino's lens wearing a mishmash of tulle, lace, sequins, denim and lace topped off with bejewelled bunny ears. Testino's images bring a whimsical sense of fun and mad hatter's fantasy to the often times all too serious world of high fashion.

Coming of Age

America's sweetheart Lindsey Wixson celebrates her coming of age with a career-defining appearance on the cover of the June/July 2012 issue of French Numéro. The black and white cover image shot by Sebastian Kim, taps into Wixson's sensual side and features the Kansas-native posing languidly in a navel grazing Gucci bathing suit accompanied by a smouldering gaze and tousled hair. For Wixson who turned eighteen in April, the cover marks a distinct departure from the Lolita-esque image that she is renowned for and instead depicts her as a fully grown woman in touch with her sensuality. Wixson began modelling at age fifteen and quickly gained notoriety for her bee-stung lips, toothy grin and doll-like features. Signed with Marilyn Model Management, Wixson looks set to join modelling's major league with photographic duo Inez Van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin who enforce a strict policy of working only with models over the age of eighteen, tweeting enthusiastically at the prospect of collaborating with Wixson on upcoming projects.

Moss on the Rocks

Controversial shutterbug Terry Richardson delivers a fashion focused editorial for the June/July 2012 issue of American Harpers Bazaar starring supermodel Kate Moss. Shot on location in Jamaica, Moss plays the dual roles of island glamazon and mother nature for Richardson's lens whilst showcasing the best of the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. With styling by fashion editor Andrew Richardson and make up courtesy of Val Garland, Moss is simply illuminating as she poses amidst the flora and fauna of the Golden Eye resort. At age thirty-eight, Moss shows no signs of slowing down and continues to be one of fashion's most enigmatic and highly sought after faces. Discovered as a waifish fourteen year old by Storm model manager Sarah Doukas in 1988 at JFK airport, Moss has enjoyed a prolific modelling career spanning over two decades and countless magazine cover appearances.
