Knock Out

Based on her singular spell-binding turn on the runway as a Givenchy exclusive during the Fall/Winter 2012 collections, Eritrean model Grace Mahary landed in my Top Ten Newcomers List for the season. The twenty-two year old beauty was born and raised in Edmonton Canada, but owes her regal exotic looks and 180 cm willowy frame to her East African heritage. Discovered at age sixteen via the Elle Canada Model search, Mahary was quickly taken on board by Elmer Olsen Model Management, the agency that coincidentally nurtured and guided the incredibly successful career of fellow Canadian model Daria Werbowry.

A complete sports fanatic in high school, Mahary abandoned her ambitions of becoming a professional basketball player when she received a blow to her head during a match which knocked out her tooth. Mahary, who had been modelling sporadically up until that point, traded in her basketball pumps and put on hold her physical education and health studies to focus solely on modelling. Mahary relocated to Paris where she is represented by Ford Model Management and modelled locally as well as in London and South Africa to build up her portfolio. Mahary's big break occurred in the lead up to the Fall/Winter 2012 shows whilst en-route to a casting when she was summoned by her booking agent to drop everything to meet with Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci. In an interview with Ford Models Damien Neva, Mahary recalls "I walked for him (Tisci). He said he likes me and he said that I'm in the right place at the right time, and I had to believe him when he said that."

Mahary is now based in New York and is riding on the wave of the considerable buzz generated by her Givenchy exclusive appearance. Mahary has an upcoming V Magazine editorial in the works and was recently profiled by nymag.com's fashion blog - the Cut, as "the New Girl" to meet. Mahary divulges in the interview with the Cut that, "I miss working out. I haven't played basketball in so long. If I could go to the courts in the summer in New York without getting my tooth knocked in, I'd love it." Judging by her mesmerising beauty and her runway perfect proportions, I have a feeling it may be some time before Mahary gets the opportunity to shoot hoops again.
