Beauty, Wisdom & Grace

During the Fall/Winter 2011 collections, I almost did a double take when I noticed former nineties top model Liisa Winkler gliding down the runway as an exclusive for Balenciaga. The following season, proving that she is not quite done with the modelling industry, Winkler's presence was again felt this time at Altuzarra, Ralph Lauren, Preen, Michael Kors and Zac Posen. Winkler was discovered at age fifteen by Mode Elle owner and agent Audra Anderson whilst shopping with her mother, and went on to become one of the most sought after models during the late nineties and the new millennium. Trained in classical ballet at  the Quinte Ballet School of Canada, Winkler decided to hang up her ballet slippers to pursue her modelling ambitions. Wiinkler's classic unadulterated beauty and grace of movement brought an sheen of elegance to her editorial appearances in the Italian, French, British and American editions of Vogue, American Harpers Bazaar and Elle, French Numéro and Italian Amica to name but a few.

Winkler's high fashion demeanour and accessible beauty made her a campaign mainstay with three consecutive Gucci campaigns to her credit in addition to a resumé which includes Calvin Klein Swimwear, BCBG Max Azria, Valentino, Ralph Lauren and most recently, Balenciaga. In what can only be described as a stroke of casting genius, Balenciaga tapped Winkler as one of its faces for the Fall/Winter 2011 campaign lensed by Steven Meisel. Speaking with Fashion Magazine, Winkler recalls "I met with Nicolas in New York and he booked me 'exclusive' for his show in Paris. Soon after I shot the campaign in New York with Steven. It was so nice to work with a great team again. After being out of the industry for the past few years raising my kids, I feel more solid in my own skin and more able to fully appreciate and understand all the creative direction that goes into a shoot like this."

Welcomed back into modelling's fold following an extended hiatus, thirty-one year old Winkler applauds the fashion industry's allegiance to past generations of models, "I love (of course) that the industry is using older models more and more. I love seeing the "supermodels" come back. It's really a lot more interesting to me to look at women who know who they are." As for her younger compatriots, Winkler offers the following advice whilst speaking with Fashion Magazine, "Always be true to who you are. Sounds so cliché but it's true. Also find out who you are... take the time to figure it out and whoever it is, that person is enough. You don't have to change who you are and what you value in order to work as a model."
