The Return of the Curve

Sports Illustrated cover girl Kate Upton shows off her best assets for her debut editorial appearance in the July 2012 issue of Spanish Vogue. Photographed by Miguel Reveriego, Upton looks to be in sensational shape and displays true modelling potential in a series of beautifully restrained poolside poses. Donning a selection of flattering one-piece bathing suits by Michael Kors, Hervé Leger, Eres, Initmissimi and American Apparel, Upton demonstrates that sometimes less (meaning flesh) is indeed more. The stark paired-back imagery pays homage to the late great photographer Herb Ritts, with Upton posing against a backdrop of sculptural landscapes without allowing the sex appeal, for which she is most famous, to overshadow her true natural beauty.

Upton may be the reigning Queen of commercial bathing suit modelling, however it appears that a high fashion crossover may be imminent. Speaking with American Vogue, Upton recalls "When I first went to my agency (IMG Models), I said, 'I know I'm not right for high fashion; I like doing commercial work; it's ok. But they told me, 'No! Actually we think you could be!" Upton now has a few more notable high fashion supporters in her camp with designer Joseph Altuzzara declaring to American Vogue, "I personally love a beautiful bust, a curvier body. When I was growing up it was the supermodel era - they were Goddesses!" Likewise, Michael Kors acknowledges in the same interview "When I cast a show, I'm not looking for robots. I don't want to see the same size, coloring or proportions. I want personality! We went from big personalities on the runway to no personalities - now I think we're ready for a blend." Kors hits the nail on the head in his summation of Upton, "You're not a wall flower; you fill the room! You have something special, so you can turn the volume down. A girl who is vanilla has to turn it up. Today it's not enough to be a beauty. You have to have personality, be smart, and love fashion otherwise you'll disappear quickly." I personally have always been a supporter of the underdog and am looking forward to the next instalment in Upton's evolution as a model, capable of mixing high fashion moxie with mainstream commercial appeal.

  1. I'm not a huge fan of Upton - her SI cover is horrible (which obviously isn't her fault) - but these pictures are fantastic. Major kudos!

    1. Thanks for your comment. Kate is improving a lot as a model. She has just done some really beautiful shots for American Vogue shot by Sebastian Kim. I think that there are some great things in store for her beyond the confines of SI.
