Humble Beginnings

With so many of today's current top models emerging from Holland, I thought it would be a timely moment to cast the spotlight on the 80s Dutch modelling sensation Linda Spierings, who has long been a favourite model of mine. Spierings was a highly sought after print and runway model in the early Eighties, appearing on the covers of the British and American editions of Vogue, French Elle, Lei Glamour and Marie Claire. Throughout her career span, Spiering acted as a muse to designers including Gianni Versace, Karl Lagerfeld and Alaia Azzedine, and has been photographed by many industry greats such as Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts, Peter Lindbergh, Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, and Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin.

Spierings was one of the true standout beauties of her generation due to smouldering, sultry, hard-to-place looks which may be attributed to her possible bi-racial background. I have searched high and low for information pertaining to Spierings' ethnic origins and have been unable to determine her exact cultural heritage. Judging by her Asiatic features and gorgeous caramel skin tone, it is most likely that Spierings comes from a mix of Dutch and Indonesian lineage. Spierings bi-racial looks appealed to a wide demographic, landing her in campaigns for Gianfranco Ferré, Karl Lagerfeld, Gianni Versace, Guerlain, Allure Fragrance, Comme des Garçons, and the iconic Revlon Unforgettable ads. Spierings still models intermittently, most recently appearing on the cover of Dutch Marie Claire for its 20th Anniversary Issue alongside nine other iconic Dutch faces. Today, Spierings is an accomplished sculptor and resides in the Netherlands with her two children and husband Pim Thomassen.

  1. Linda's magic came (and no doubt still does :-) from inside, as the old saying claims about real beauty. Not only physically stunning, but also intelligent, a very nice, modest person and always true to herself.
I still think she could also have been a wonderful movie actress in psychological dramas and I bet she had such offers, but chose not to.
I knew her before she became famous, but when I once ran into her when she already was, she hadn't changed a bit: still moving around Amsterdam on the back of her boyfriend's bike :-). The bubbles never went to her head.
