The Transformer

The true mark of a top notch model is one who possesses the ability to transform seamlessly into varying roles and characters. A model's versatility in front of the lens and the ability to deliver the goods on any editorial brief is far more conducive to ensuring longevity rather than being reliant on looks alone. One model whose trademark ability to morph from one character to another whilst retaining a distinct clear sense of self is the super cool and endearing Finnish export Suvi Koponen.

Twenty-four year old Koponen began modelling in 2005, after winning Finland's equivalent of America's Next Top Model called Mallikoulu (meaning model school in Finnish). Koponen's big break however came in September 2006 when she was requested as a Prada exclusive at the Fall/Winter collections. Koponen has since gained a reputation in the industry as one of the most skilled posers, running rings around any sixteen-year-old ingenue with repeat editorial appearances in the American, British, French, Italian and German editions of Vogue, Interview, i-D Magazine, Purple and Dazed & Confused.

Koponen's aristocratic air, flaxen golden hair and hazel eyes are made all the more irresistible by her cool as ice demeanour in front of the lens. Koponen's aloofness lends her a detached edginess that has translated into blue chip campaign appearances for the likes of Alexander McQueen, Chloé, Calvin Klein, Blumarine, Emporio Armani, Mulberry, Balenciaga and Pringle of Scotland. Equally compelling is Koponen's proliferation of body art which at last count consisted of seven tattoos strategically positioned on her hands, wrist, back and chest. In 2009, Koponen too a hiatus from modelling to travel and explore the world. The self-imposed break fuelled the industry's interest in Koponen providing her with the impetus to continue modelling but on her own terms without the falling prey to overexposure and burn out.

During the Spring/Summer 2012 shows, Koponen emerged as one of the season's most coveted faces appearing at Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Proenza Schouler, Chloé and Balmain amongst others. Koponen's relatability  and her ability to retain an element of surprise in her modelling arsenal makes her an attractive campaign proposition. Koponen's popularity shows no signs of waning with recent lucrative Fall/Winter 2012 campaign appearances for Chloé, Alexander McQueen and Pringle of Scotland. Koponen however still finds the time to keep an eye out for newcomers, most recently escorting French Réunion model Pauline Haorau down the runway at Anthony Vaccarello as Haorau struggled to stay on two feet at the Fall/Winter 2012 collections.
