Proud as Punch

I arrived yesterday in New York City for Fashion Week and woke up this morning to the wonderful news that my favourite model Joan Smalls has nabbed the coveted top spot on Models.com's Top 50 Models ranking. Since Smalls' breakthrough moment in the Spring of 2010 when designer Riccardo Tisci cast her as an exclusive in Givenchy's Haute Couture show, the Puerto Rican native has achieved the unfathomable. In the space of two short years, Smalls has literally brought the Super back into modelling with her trademark stomp down the runways of the most prestigious fashion houses, as an editorial mainstay in the American, French and Italian editions of Vogue, with her appearances in the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show and the Pirelli Calendar shot by Mario Sorrenti, not to mention her cover appearances for i-D, Vogue Italia, Australian Vogue, the American and Korean editions of W, Pop, the Last Magazine, British Harpers Bazaar, V Magazine, British Elle, and blue chip campaign appearances for  Fendi, Roberto Cavalli, Chanel, Gucci, Balenciaga, Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Calvin Klein Jeans, David Yurman, and the crowning glory of all, an Estée Lauder Cosmetics contract.

In an interview with Models.com to mark Smalls' instatement as the leading model of her generation, Smalls sheds an insight into the steely resolve that has gotten her to where she is today, "I want people to feel that energy when I come through the runway. One thing I'm thinking about is 'Get out of my way'. It's just in a positive reinforcing way to myself, of like, I am here. Look at me, pay attention and I don't want anybody coming in between me and my moment." Barely able to contain her excitement and with tears welling, Smalls reveals euphorically "It feels amazing being Number 1. I'm extremely flattered, honoured and just blessed because it just cements that all my hard work means something, and it, you know, it paid off. Not having a life you know, travelling on your birthday, not having holidays, actually pays off."
