Top Ten Newcomers S/S 2013 - Athena Wilson

Eighteen year old Athena Wilson is part of Ford's stealth battalion of newcomers who are currently redefining the landscape of modelling. I first met Wilson at the Altuzarra casting in New York and knew instantaneously as she took her turn walking for casting director Kannon Rajah and designer Joseph Altuzarra that we had a breakout star in our midst. I photographed over a hundred girls at Altuzarra and my favourite face of the day was beyond a shadow of doubt, Athena Wilson's. Wilson quite simply has the complete package; incredible beauty courtesy of her mixed Greek/American ancestry, runway perfect proportions, a quiet yet knowing confidence, and personality like you wouldn't believe. It comes as no surprise then that Wilson was one of the few newcomers to be embraced in all four fashion capitals, running the full gamut of New York, London, Milan and Paris with appearances at Altuzarra, Edun, Marc Jacobs, Narciso Rodriguez, Creatures of the Wind, Acne, Christopher Kane, Mary Katranzou, Missoni, Philosophy, Marni, Fendi, Trussardi, Rick Owens and Versus.

Wilson hails from San Clemente, California, and modelled part-time locally in Los Angeles while focusing on completing her high school education. In July 2012, Wilson relocated to New York to pursue modelling full-time with the view towards securing more serious and concentrated work. I caught up with Wilson at the end of the Spring/Summer 2013 season and discovered a young woman who is every bit as engaging as she is beautiful. Wilson has garnered a great deal of attention courtesy of her unique haircut which she describes as "a twenties style bob since it's black and the bangs are short," whilst adding with a glint of humour, "I don't like thinking of it as a page boy haircut, that just makes me think of bad year book photos from the seventies." Wilson reveals the gradual metamorphosis of her distinct and instantly recognisable look, "There isn't much of a story behind it as I'd always had short hair. When I came to New York, I had a rat's tail with a turquoise streak in it. Paul (Rowland) liked it, but of course it's not the most versatile or 'chic' hairstyle, so we cut the bangs and my rat's tail, and it was dyed black brown for Marc Jacobs."

During the Altuzarra casting I was struck by Wilson's effortless transformation from an eager to please newbie while chatting with the casting panel, into a confident young woman armed with a panther like walk and nerves of steel. It is this determination and commitment to her craft which has paid dividends for Wilson in her debut show season. Wilson reminisces about the past month of fashion highlights to Inoubliable Model Army, "Marc Jacobs was big for me, and so was opening for Creatures of the Wind, those guys are so cool. In London, Christopher Kane and Erdem were rad, and so was opening for Mary Katrantzou. I never thought I'd be walking for Fendi in Milan. It was crazy and I loved the collection. And in Paris, Rick Owens was so fun plus I was very flattered that my wig had short bangs just like real life! Overall, the highlight isn't a specific show but rather that I do feel proud of myself. I'm pretty pleased with how things went. It's rare, so that in itself is a highlight." Wilson's natural exuberance and enthusiasm is evident as she reveals insightfully, "My favourite part of modelling is meeting and working with creative and interesting people. I just want to shoot with some cool people and do projects that I genuinely find interesting. I'd really like to collaborate in some way for a really cool project." Somehow, I get a very strong inkling that Athena Wilson will be appearing in a lot of really cool projects, collaborating with some really cool people in the very near future...

  1. Athena is stunning. She transforms with each collection. She can be young, fresh, cool California girl and an exotic sexy siren.
Great to see that she is getting the recognition she deserves.
