Full Circle

France's former first lady Carla Bruni Sarkozy returns to her modelling roots with Paris Vogue's December 2012 issue. Bruni takes on the role of guest editor and appears on the magazine's cover captured by the ubiquitous Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. During her modelling heyday, Bruni formed part of that exclusive clique of women who reigned supreme over fashion's runways. While Bruni never quite reached the same lofty heights of success as some of her supermodel counterparts, she has achieved considerable recognition and acclaim beyond the realm of modelling as a singer, actress and activist. Bruni returns to modelling's fold, reuniting with her close friends and fellow compatriots Christy Turlington, Yasmin Le Bon and Helena Christensen. With the issue due for release December 3, model aficionados will be waiting with abated breath in anticipation of what the outspoken and opinionated Bruni has in store.

Individual Allure

i-D Magazine showcases five relative newcomers in contrasting beauty looks for daytime and party time. Kolfinna Kristoffersdottir, Moa Aberg, Ophelie Rupp, Lena Hardt and Kate King provide the perfect canvas for natural barely there make-up looks and shimmering eyes offset by dewy skin. Photographer Richard Bush captures the individual allure of each model whether it be the quirky off-kilter beauty of Iceland's Kristoffersdottir or Hardt's strikingly defined Germanic bone structure to King's hard to place bi-racial looks. More importantly, what this eclectic group of modern day beauties represents is perhaps the fashion industry's hankering for models with distinctly unique features and a memorable presence both on and off the runway.

Viva la Espana!

Photographer Mario Testino pulls out all the stops as only he can with his signature razzle-dazzle glam for Spanish Vogue's December 2012 issue. Testino assembles a cast of top models including Eva Herzigova, Natasha Poly, Isabeli Fontana, Aymeline Valade, Jon Kortajarena, River Vilperi and Andres Velencoso Segura for the party themed shoot. The editorial entitled "Jolgorio y Algarabia" or "Fun & Excitement" features a cast of local Spanish identities including Pedro Almovador, Nieve Alvarez, Inés Sastre, Carolina Herrera, Rossy de Palma and Eugenia Silva. Spanish Vogue has clearly stepped up its game for the festive season with multiple editorials lensed by Testino featuring the industry's best. With styling Beat Bollinger and hair and make up courtesy of Christiaan and Tom Pecheux, this editorial make other international editions of Vogue pale in comparison. I absolutely adore the vibrancy of this editorial and the energy that is conveyed with each image that encapsulates the unique spirit of Spain.

Double Trouble

Back in the day when supermodel tag was reserved for a select group of women whose incredulous beauty and presence commanded the undivided attention of the fashion industry. Amongst this motley crew of gorgeous muses were two young Brits, otherwise known as Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell, who marched to the beat of their very own drum. Moss and Campbell have been in the modelling spotlight for close to three decades and the public's fascination with the pair continues with no signs of abating. Moss was discovered in 1988 at age 14 by Storm Model Managements Sarah Doukas while in transit at JFK airport. Campbell was similarly scouted at the precocious age of 15 by Beth Boldt of Synchro Model during a shopping expedition in Covent Garden. Campbell and Moss would go on to become two of the most celebrated models in history, appearing on countless magazine covers, in campaigns for every conceivable high fashion label, and posing together for publications including  American Harpers Bazaar, i-D Magazine and various international editions of Vogue.

Interview Russia reunites the dastardly duo for its December 2012 issue shot by boy wonders Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott. The dramatic black and white imagery encapsulates the timeless and mesmerising beauty of Moss and Campbell as they don looks from the Spring/Summer 2013 collections of Saint Laurent, Gucci and Costume National. The editorial serves as a reminder of an era when models were truly super and not simply a dispensable commodity at the beck and call of an industry which benefits from the ephemeral star quality of the current generation of modelling hopefuls.

Jump to the Beat

Joan Smalls shows no signs of slowing down as the year draws to a close, nabbing yet another cover appearance this time for the December 2012 issue of Vogue Turkey. The current number 1. ranked model in the world according to models.com, is captured by photographer Cuneyt Akeroglu for Turkish Vogue's cover and accompanying editorial feature. Smalls displays stunning versatility and modelling prowess imbuing each image with boundless energy, warmth and personality. Smalls ambition, dedication and professionalism is the stuff made of modelling legends with the best surely to come in 2013. Having met and photographed Smalls at the Oscar de la Renta fittings during the Spring/Summer 2013 collections, I can say with my hand on my heart that Smalls possesses that true supermodel aura that is seldom seen amongst today's generation of top tier models.

Commercial Appeal

Dutch Vogue delivers it's most commercially accessible cover to date with it's December 2012 issue featuring homegrown supermodel Doutzen Kroes. The Victoria's Secret Angel is lensed by Patrick Demarchelier for the holiday issue in casual looks by Gucci, Chanel, Celine, Hakaan and Helmut Lang. The twenty-seven year old curvaceous model is experiencing somewhat of a career resurgence following more than a decade in the modelling industry, with recent editorial appearances for Allure, Love Magazine, V, American Harpers Bazaar, and the French, American, British, Chinese and Spanish editions of Vogue. Kroes' radiant wholesome looks and athletic physique are maintained through a combination of heathy eating, good genetics and physical activity including speed skating, shadow boxing and surfing. The fashion industry appears to be embracing an ever growing number of models approaching their thirties and beyond, bringing a much needed dose of diversity and relatability to modelling.

Rise & Shine

The fashion industry has anointed a new "it girl" in the guise of pint-sized British modelling sensation Cara Delevingne. Twenty year old Delevingne compensated for her tiny 173 cm frame during the Spring/Summer 2013 shows with her larger than life personality and sassy runway swagger, both of which she brought with considerable vigour during her 39 show appearances. Delevingne has been nothing short of ubiquitous since she debuted at Burberry Prorsum show a year and a half ago at the Fall/Winter 2012 collections. Delevingne has since been photographed by industry heavy hitters Terry Richardson, Inez Van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin, Mario Testino, Bruce Weber, Norman Jean Roy, and Peter Lindbergh for a diverse selection of publications including i-D, American Harpers Bazaar, W Magazine, Russh, CR Fashion Book, and the American, Italian, Russian and British editions of Vogue. The industry's infatuation with Delevingne reaches fever pitch with an editorial feature and accompanying article in Style.com Magazine's Spring 2013 issue. Photographer Matt Irwin trails Delevingne whilst in Paris, at the tail end of the Spring/Summer 2013 season.
