Dark Horse

Twenty year old Sydney-sider Julia Nobis has emerged as modelling's ultimate dark horse following three electrifying show seasons where she eclipsed runways across all four fashion capitals. During the recent Spring/Summer 2013 collections, Nobis appeared in 61 shows, opening for Roberto Cavalli, Vanessa Bruno, Derek Lam, Narciso Rodriguez, and for Raf Simons' debut Saint Laurent collection. The season before Nobis was anointed the "Face of Fall" by WWD, following her record setting 73 show tally. Fashion's current undisputed queen of the catwalk was discovered in 2009 by an agent from Priscilla's Model Management whilst walking home from school. Nobis modelled part-time locally while completing her higher school education before debuting internationally two and a half years ago at the Fall/Winter 2011 collections as a Calvin Klein exclusive. Since her auspicious debut, Nobis has quietly built a reputation in the industry as a character model in a similar vein to her fellow model and buddy Freja Beha Erichsen. Nobis androgynous rough and tumble beauty is perfectly counter-balanced by her delicate features and her lithe 180 cm frame.

Nobis' ubiquitous runway presence is paying dividends with unprecedented editorial interest from publications including W, Interview, Dazed & Confused, French Numéro, i-D, Love, Another Magazine, the Gentlewoman, American Harper's Bazaar and Vogue Italia. Nobis' off the runway pursuits make her one of the more genuinely compelling personalities amongst the current generation of catwalkers. Currently undertaking a Bachelor of Science course through RMIT in Melbourne, Nobis harbours aspirations of one day studying medicine. In an interview with the Telegraph Nobis reveals, "I want to study medicine when I finish modelling, so completing my schooling was important to me. I'll head back to university when all of this is all over but, right now, I'm happy on the catwalk." Nobis' other passions include music, she plays the guitar and piano and has also been known to upload impromptu guitar performances of Georgia on my Mind, Can't get you Out of my Head, and Moonlight Sonata on YouTube.

Perhaps it is Nobis' relaxed modelling approach and her understanding of the industry's inner machinations which make her all the more appealing to fashion denizens. When quizzed by Frockwriter whether she thinks "it's unrealistic that young girls who want to enter the industry can expect to make any money? What would be your advice to them?" Julia answers, "It's not unrealistic but I wouldn't plan on it either, because things can change in a blink of an eye. Take it seriously, by all means, take it seriously while you're doing it. But always have a Plan B. It's better to be safe than sorry." In spite of fashion's current infatuation, Nobis clearly has her sights set on Plan B.
