Top 10 Newcomers for Fall/Winter 2013

The Fall/Winter 2013 season brought a raft of newcomers jostling for prime positions on the runways that mattered most. From Calvin Klein to Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Altuzarra, BCBG Max Azria, Burberry Prorsum, Prada, Gucci, Emilio Pucci, Anthony Vaccarello, Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Chanel, the following list of girls left an indelible impression as they traversed the four fashion capitals. A motley crew of relative newcomers including Mijo Mihaljcic, Dauphine McKee, Manuela Frey, Nicole Pollard, Sam Rollinson, and Senait Gidley broke through modelling's ranks landing squarely in the most blue chip show line-ups. Particularly gratifying though was the industry's sudden embrace of Dana Taylor, Sasha Luss, Tess Hellfeuer, and Amanda Murphy, whose years of grunt modelling finally paid dividends with influential casting directors and designers giving them the nod of approval. Perhaps most telling about this new group of in demand catwalkers is the relatability and life experience that these women bring to the fore, making them equally compelling both on and off the runway.

The twenty-one year old Russian first entered modelling's fray in 2007 and has paid her dues by finally hitting pay dirt this season with turns on the runway for Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Prada, Versace, Givenchy, Louis Vuitton and Chanel. With a spate of recent editorial bookings for Vogue Italia and Italian Glamour lensed respectively by Peter Lindbergh and Hans Feurer, as well as a Spring/Summer 2013 Carolina Herrera campaign under her oh so lithe belt, Luss is well on her way to a stellar editorial and campaign season.

Modelling from the age of 15, Taylor forms part of a unique collective of American newcomers who are helping to redefine concepts of American beauty. Represented by modelling powerhouse IMG, Taylor brought a distinctly sultry supermodel swagger to the runways of Erdem, Dolce & Gabbana, Anotnio Berardi, Byblos, and Aquilano Rimondi.

Rollinson's impeccable peaches and cream complexion, expressive blue eyes, and high set cheekbones framed by a striking square jawline had casting directors and designers scrambling to feature the English rose in their line-ups. Rollinson's incredulous 63 show tally ticked all the right boxes with appearances at Prada, Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Alexander Wang, and Balenciaga. Ensuing editorial appearances in British Vogue, American Harper's Bazaar, CR Fashion Book, V Magazine, and W as well as a Spring/Summer 2013 Balenciaga campaign attest to Rollinson's true star potential.

Serbian newcomer Mijo Mihaljcic played her cards perfectly throughout the Fall/Winter 2013 season combining beauty, grace and a beguiling androgyny to stunning effect in her 48 show appearances. The statuesque 180 cm dark haired beauty was marked as a newcomer to watch from the outset thanks to her closing slot at BCBG Max Azria at the beginning of the New York collections. Mihaljcic proved to be unstoppable as the show season unfolded, stalking the runways of Altuzarra, Proenza Schouler, Reed Krakoff, Max Mara, Roberto Cavalli, Céline, and Chanel. In a season which left scarce few opportunities for black newcomers to shine, Canadian ingenue Senait Gidey seized the moment during her eight pristine show appearances. Gidey had even the most jaded industry pundits taking a second glance as she graced the runways of Burberry Prorsum, Christopher Kane, Emilio Pucci, Max Mara, Loewe, Kenzo, and Guy Laroche. The clincher though was Gidey's inclusion as the sole black model to be featured in the cast for Chanel's Fall/Winter 2013 presentation. Gidey's luminescent skin, soulful brown eyes, bee stung lips and radiant smile have drawn comparisons to Somalian supermodel Iman Abdulmajid. With IMG Models guiding her career path, Gidey's absence from the New York collections and her highly selective show list is no doubt a strategic move on the part of her management team. The stakes on Gidey's blue chip appeal will surely soar in the aftermath of the Fall/Winter 2013 season.

Pollard's major breakthrough moment came in the guise of a worldwide exclusive for Christian Dior during the Spring/Summer 2013 collections. Pollard clearly impressed as she was swiftly slated to appear in the Spring/Summer 2013 campaign for the prestigious fashion house photographed by Willy Vanderperre. The 17 year old consolidated on the interest generated from those exclusives, backing up with a 36 show tally at the Fall/Winter 2013 collections that reads like the who's who of the fashion elite. Frey began proceedings by opening exclusively for Calvin Klein in New York, turning heads with her stunning 181 cm silhouette and powerful runway death stare. The bubbly sport obsessed beauty channeled her energies into stellar runway turns at Antonio Berardi, Burberry Prosum, Fendi, Emilio Pucci, Dries Van Noten, Alexander McQueen, Christian Dior, and Chanel amongst others. Amanda Murphy

American model Amanda Murphy's seemingly 'overnight' success at the Fall/Winter 2013 collections is a testament to the power of persistence, tenacity and self belief. Modelling since 2008, stirrings of interest in Murphy began with her appearance in Calvin Klein's Pre-Fall 2013 presentation and a booking for Proenza Schouler's Pre-Fall 2013 look book. Proenza Schouler again enlisted Murphy to appear in its Fall/Winter 2013 presentation before being she was hand picked by casting director Ashley Brokaw to appear exclusively at Prada, where she held both opening and closing honours. Twenty four year old Murphy was a standout at the Paris collections appearing at Lanvin, Christian Dior, Loewe, Stella McCartney, Hermés, Dries Van Noten, Miu Miu, and Chanel. Murphy's intoxicating beauty is a result of her hybrid mix of native American Indian, German and Irish blood. With a chameleon like quality and comparisons to modelling legend Linda Evangelista, Murphy may well have to pass on her part-time job as a radio technologist in lieu of the spate blue chip bookings that will surely follow as a result of her newly minted status as the season's most coveted newcomer.
