First Impressions

With Spring/Summer 2014 pre-castings in full swing, a gazillion models have descended on Manhattan in the hopes of scoring key runway spots during the New York collections. The casting process can be particularly ruthless with models given less than a few minutes to wow a casting panel with her personality, beauty, runway prowess and her presence. In an industry where a model's looks are her most valuable commodity, presentation and an well defined sense of style is vital to harnessing a casting director's attention within the first few seconds of entering a casting room. Not every model is given the opportunity to showcase her personality whether it be due to being dismissed as irrelevant on first sight or perhaps due to casting jitters or language barriers. This is where a model's sense of style comes into play in conveying her personality, mood and the all important cool factor. Production agency Art + Commerce see the cream of modelling talent in the lead into the show collections and with advertising clients that include Alexander Wang, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga and Prada the stakes are high. Below are a selection of faces that Production at Art + Commerce has firmly in its sights.

Mother Knows Best

It may be Father's Day this weekend in my home country of Australia nevertheless Mom's manage to steal the limelight for Vogue Italia's September 2013 "Like Mother, like Daughter" themed editorial. Top models Doutzen Kroes, Julia Nobis, Amanda Murphy, Stella Tenant, Saskia de Brauw, and Julia Stegner pose for Steven Meisel in dual incarnations as mother and daughter. Meisel's uncanny ability of taking an idea and imbuing elements of fashion and fantasy to create an editorial is in full effect as Kroes, Tennant et al. play high fashion dress ups. Fashion editor Marie Amélie Sauvé matches individual looks to each model with ensembles from the Fall/Winter 2013 collections of Saint Laurent, Loewe, Chanel, Hermes, and Gucci. The editorial has something in the bag for everyone running the full gamut from Tenant's sublime aristocratic air, Nobis' effortless cool girl vibes, de Brauw's free-spirited bohemian flair, and Murphy's modern day glamour. It is industry veteran Doutzen Kroes who trumps the competition by scoring the all important September issue cover slot and her fourth Vogue cover for the month, peering innocently with a  doe-eyed expression while donning a retro-inspired outfit and beret.

And God Created Woman

Interview Magazine's editorial director Fabien Baron casts his intrepid lens on a collection of the industry's sultriest bombshells for an editorial aptly titled "The Goddesses". With little more than a strand of pearls and luxurious furs to protect their modesty, Miranda Kerr, Candice Swanepoel, Toni Garrn, Jourdan Dunn, Andreea Diaconu, Doutzen Kroes, Constance Jablonski, Karlina Caune, Cameron Russell, Behati Prinsloo, and Alessandra Ambrosio turn up the heat for the scintillating spread. Each model brings her own allure and creative input to the 70's vintage erotica inspired shoot while conveying an intensity and strength through Baron's lens. Given the incredulous physical attributes of Baron's coterie of Goddesses it comes as no surprise that all of the models bar Andreea Diaconu and Karlina Caune have appeared previously in the Victoria's Secret Runway show. Interview's mammoth model themed September issue featuring 88 of the industry's leading models has blogs and industry forums abuzz with excitement over the return of models into the public spotlight.

Star Studded Appeal - Sasha Luss

With the Spring/Summer 2014 collections looming around the corner, Russian stunner Sasha Luss gets a head start on the competition with an editorial in the October 2013 edition of Japanese Vogue. The twenty-one year old Magadan native is captured by photographic trio Luigi & Daniele + Iango in studded and metallic armoured ensembles styled by George Cortina. Represented by Women Model Management in New York, Luss was the unequivocal breakthrough star of the Fall/Winter 2013 collections. Luss took no prisoners in her 58 show bookings as she made a clean sweep of the Fall/Winter 2013 runways. Luss' combination of jaw-dropping beauty, industry experience, and incandescent personality have translated to key editorial and campaign slots in the aftermath of the Fall/Winter 2013 shows. A spate of editorial appearances for Interview, Russian Vogue, French Numéro, Vogue Italia, CR Fashion Book, and Harper's Bazaar Latin America, in addition to campaign bookings for Valentino, Tommy Hilfiger and Carolina Herrera 212 fragrance hint at Luss' star studded appeal. Watch for Luss to continue her dream run as the Spring/Summer 2014 season unfolds...
