British Vogue's 12 Year Drought - Malaika Firth & Riley Montana

British Vogue's bumper September 2014 issue features a Bruce Weber lensed editorial showcasing a magnificent cast of black modelling talent. Supermodel Naomi Campbell returns to her native Brixton accompanied by stunning newcomers Malaika Firth, Riley Montana, and Alewya Demmisse. Entitled "Home-Coming", Campbell is captured by Weber in a series of intimate portraits as she catches up with an entourage of friends and family including designer Azzedine Alaia, stylist and fashion editor Juilia Sarr Jamois, and her mother and grandma Valerie and Ruby Campbell. The celebratory proceedings are marred however by the absence of Campbell and her coterie of rising black stars from the magazine's cover. Which makes little sense from a high fashion POV given Campbell's status as one of the most iconic supermodels of all time, and Firth and Montana's combined blue chip campaign clout for labels including Givenchy, Prada, Burberry, Valentino, Tommy Hilfiger, and Marc Jacobs.

The cover slight against Campbell has drawn media ire towards British Vogue's seemingly "whites-only" stance towards its cover models. As reported by the Guardian's Tasny Hoskins, British Vogue has not featured a black model alone on its cover since Campbell's solo appearance in August 2002. More recently, British supermodel Jourdan Dunn appeared on British Vogue's November 2008 cover alongside models Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Eden Clark. When quizzed by the Guardian as to its editorial policy and the exclusion of black models in particular Dunn from its cover, British Vogue's press office responded with the statement, "We have put Beyoncé and Rihanna on the cover of Vogue and at least half of our covers do not feature models. We love Jourdan Dunn and she was the cover star of the last Miss Vogue which previously had featured Cara Delevingne." With Puerto Rican top model Joan Smalls, Egyptian Moroccan newcomer Imaan Hammam, and Chinese model of the moment Fei Fei Sun gracing the cover of American Vogue's September 2014 issue, IMA hopes that British Vogue will recognise the power and beauty of diversity in its cover candidates.
